After more than 40 years of extensive study, the FDA has found both saline and silicone options to be safe, with similar performance in most areas. Since silicone implants were re-approved for cosmetic use in 2006, their popularity has surged—now outpacing saline implants by roughly 20 to 1. The reason? Silicone implants more closely mimic natural breast tissue due to their similar density, while saline implants tend to feel like water balloons—because that’s essentially what they are. How Long Do Implants Last?
While over 90% of implants remain intact after 10 years, most patients can expect to consider a maintenance or replacement procedure around the 15- to 20-year mark. Breast implants are not lifetime devices, but you do not need to replace them if you’re happy with how they look and feel.
Will Breast Implants Lift My Breasts?
In some cases. If you have mild to moderate sagging, breast implants may fill out the skin and elevate your breasts. If you have more noticeable sagging, you will need to combine breast implants with a breast lift to add fullness while improving breast shape and position.
Will Breast Implants Make Me Sick?
Some patients report systemic symptoms they attribute to their implants, often referred to as Breast Implant Illness (BII). However, this is not a formally recognized medical condition with defined diagnostic criteria. In 2006, the FDA concluded that breast implants do not increase the risk or severity of systemic illnesses, including autoimmune disease.
One of the largest studies on this topic followed 20,000 women with silicone implants and compared them to 20,000 women with no surgery. After 10 years, both groups showed the same incidence of autoimmune symptoms—0.8%.
Dr. Curtsinger closely follows the latest research on BII and prioritizes patient safety and advocacy. Like the FDA, he maintains that breast implants are safe and consistently yield high satisfaction rates—currently estimated at 98.7%.
